Pedaling Towards a Cure

Pedaling Toward a Cure

Team Functionize is pedaling towards a Parkinson’s Disease cure with the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s Tour de Fox! But, what does that mean, exactly? What is riding a bike going to do? Well, it’s not so much the riding of bikes as it is the raising of money, of course. As we push our Tour de Fox fundraising into high gear, I want to make sure I highlight exactly just how important your donations are. Some of you may not realize, but 100% of gifts made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) go directly towards finding a cure. Not…

Guatemala 2019

Guatemala 2019 & Jake's Take on Pain

As some of you know, I have recently returned home from my second trip to Guatemala through the nonprofit group I help out, MENTOREVOLUTION. This trip was highlighted by traveling around Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango, teaching various groups of students, physical therapists, and physicians totaling over 300 individuals throughout the week. These trips always leave me feeling humbled and thankful for the privilege and opportunity I have been given simply by growing up in the United States.  Guatemala ranks last in nearly every category with regards to health in all of Central America. In the last few decades, Central America…

Parkinson’s and Daughters

Parkinson's and Daughters

“It’s not fair!” “You’re right. It’s not fair. Life isn’t fair. Baby, the closest to fair you’ll ever get is in my house.” Truly, my mom has always done her best to make good on that reply, one I heard many times as “it’s not fair” is somehow the battle cry of spoiled children everywhere. My life has never been fair; I’ve had it much better than many. You’re Only One Decision Away from a Totally Different Life

Scary, right? Maybe, but it doesn’t have to be. Let’s back it up a bit. I moved to Atlanta in March of this year, but it certainly wasn’t the first time I’ve done something like that. For my partner and I, individually and as a couple, getting to a place in our lives and our careers where we are fulfilled, empowered, and “home” has required A LOT of moving. In 2006 I moved from Oregon to Chicago for graduate school– obviously there were closer schools, one less than an hour from home, but Northwestern was the one at the top…

Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

It’s been 20 years since the Baz Luhrmann song, “Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen” hit the airwaves in 1999. I was finishing up my last year of physical therapy school and the song resonated with me. I had one year before graduating and heading out into the unknown world bound to be the best physical therapist I could be. The lyrics, though simple, provided amazing advice about the future and ideas to reflect upon during the ups and downs of life. That song became my mantra over the next several years. If you haven’t heard the song I’m referencing, check…
